The most severe abuse happened one night. As the infamous photographs attest and Sabber recounted, he and the other men were forced to strike poses in the nude, masturbate, simulate sodomy and endure beatings and ridicule -- all while one female soldier snapped a camera. Sabber estimated that the soldier took 60 photos.
In the photo of the hooded Iraqis forming a human pyramid, Sabber said, he was on the ground on the far left. In another photo, he was the hooded man whose genitalia was pointed to by a cigarette-chomping female soldier giving the thumbs-up sign.
Sabber was taken aside, and his captors pulled off his hood. He was made to face a female soldier and ordered to masturbate. She was squeezing her breasts and laughing at him, he said. He protested, saying he could not perform what he was asked. They pummeled him some more.
Army Pfc. Lynndie England, shown in photographs smiling and pointing at naked Iraqi prisoners, was charged Friday by the military with assaulting the detainees and conspiring to mistreat them. A female US soldier points alongside hooded and naked Iraqi prisoners, at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad in Iraq, in this undated photo. [Reuters] England is the seventh soldier from an Army Reserve military police unit to be charged in a scandal that has drawn outrage around the world and damaged the reputation of the United States as it tries to stabilize Iraq. Earlier Friday, England's relatives insisted she was following orders when she posed for the pictures, including one in which she held a leash attached to a man's neck. England, 21, faces four allegations, according to a statement from the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg. She is accused of "assaulting Iraqi detainees on multiple occasions;" conspiring with another soldier, Spc. Charles Graner, to mistreat the prisoners; committing an indecent act; and committing acts "that were prejudicial to good order and discipline and were of nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces through her mistreatment of Iraqi detainees." England is seen smiling for the camera in one picture, cigarette in her mouth, as she leans forward and points at the genitals of a naked, hooded Iraqi. Another photo shows her holding a leash that encircles the neck of a naked Iraqi man lying on his side on a cellblock floor, his face contorted. No lawyer has been appointed yet to represent England, according to Col. Billy Buckner, a spokesman for the division. She may also hire a civilian lawyer, he said. The charges must be taken up in Article 32 investigation, a process similar to a civilian grand jury, before they can be sent to a general court-martial. Buckner said potential penalties could range from a reprimand to imprisonment and a punitive discharge. Lynndie England is pictured in her 2001 senior portrait from Frankfort High School in Short Gap, West Virginia. England was identified as being pictured in some of the recently released images taken at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad. The scandal exploded last week with the release of photographs showing grinning uniformed personnel posing in front of naked detainees. One photograph that first appeared in the Washington Post May 6, depicted a naked Iraqi on his knees with a leash around his neck that was held by an American servicewoman, identified as England.[Reuters]Both England and Graner were members of the Army Reserve's 372nd Military Police Company, based in Cumberland, Md. Her rank has previously been given as a specialist. The Army statement referred to her as a private first class; Buckner did not know whether she had been demoted. England was reassigned to a military police unit at Fort Bragg when she returned from Iraq and will continue her duties for the present, the Corps statement said. She was not in custody. England's family defended her Friday at a news conference in Fountain, W.Va., about 240 miles northeast of Charleston. They could not be immediately reached for comment after the charges were announced. "I don't believe my sister did what was in those photos," her sister Jessica Klinestiver said. "Certain people told her what to do. I believe they were posed." England's family said she is four months pregnant with Graner's child. Graner's attorney has said he faces a possible court-martial on criminal charges of maltreatment and indecent acts. After photos from the Abu Ghraib prison were beamed around the globe, reporters flocked to Fort Ashby, a town of 1,300 people where England's extended family lives in a trailer park. England's parents left town Thursday to escape the attention. The family's lawyer, Roy Hardy, said he arranged the news conference to relieve family members from constant media pressure. "No one has the full story of what was going on in those pictures," Hardy said. "They don't show what was behind her, beside her or what was going on behind the scenes. "When all this comes to light, she will not be depicted the way she's being depicted right now," he said. England's relatives have said she was a "paper pusher" in Iraq who processed inmates and only went to the prison to visit friends who worked there. England was described as a kind young woman who loves athletics and the outdoors and is unafraid to speak her mind. She joined the Army Reserve as a high school junior to earn money for college. Family and friends showed reporters a half-dozen photos of England, including images from her senior prom and high school graduation in 2001. "I just wanted to make sure you guys knew she was a human being," Hardy told reporters.
When you looked out the window of my trailer in Iraq, all you could see was sand. The unit was 16 by 18 feet, divided into three small sections, each of which housed two soldiers. My roommate was female, although the trailer was coed. In my tiny area, I had a laptop and an MP3 player and all my CDs from home. I slept in a twin bed under a blue velour blanket that my husband sent me and butterfly-print sheets that I bought at the PX [Post Exchange, a store for military personnel]. At bedtime, I'd change into a pretty nightgown I brought from home. But I only wore stuff like that inside the trailer. Outside, we always had to wear our uniforms.
More recently, female anatomy has become a regular sight on both British and American TV, especially following the rise of the US cable networks such as HBO. All but one of the main actresses in Sex and the City (HBO, 1998-2004) bared their breasts at some point; the exception was Sarah Jessica Parker, who is reputed to have had a modesty clause in her contract. Lena Dunham in Girls (HBO, since 2012) is frequently seen nude, and the character of Cersei in Game of Thrones (HBO, since 2011) has been paraded naked through a street with the camera watching from both sides.
What is one to make, for example, of the way Captain Leo Merck is said to have behaved? Captain Merck, in charge of a military police unit, is alleged to have spent his time in Iraq taking "nude pictures of female soldiers without their knowledge".
Around the same time, another general, Jeffrey A. Sinclair, was court-martialed for allegedly forcing a female soldier to give him oral sex and threatening to kill her if she told anyone. He was also tried for requesting nude pictures from two other women and for having an affair (which is illegal in the military). Sinclair was fined $20,000 and not sent to jail.
THE THIN RED LINE (R) Director: Terrence Malick. With Sean Penn, John Travolta, Nick Nolte, Woody Harrelson, Gary Oldman, John C. Reilly, John Savage, John Cusack, George Clooney. (166 min.) +++ American soldiers battle elusive enemies in this sweeping adaptation of James Joness thoughtful World War II novel about the Guadalcanal campaign. Although the story seems disjointed at times, no other war movie has tried so valiantly to convey not only the suffering of combat but the awful fissures it leaves between humanitys ideal oneness with itself and the world we live in. Flawed but fascinating. +++ Intense, violent, poetic. Sex/Nudity: 1 bedroom scene with no nudity; 3 scenes of partially nude natives or soldiers bathing. Violence: Gunfire, beatings, dismemberment; combat violence throughout. Profanity: 59 expressions. Drugs: 3 scenes of alcohol; 26 with smoking. 2ff7e9595c
